LWVUS Immigration Study: Resources Now Available to the Public The LWVUS has launched a public page for the LWVUS Immigration Study and created a resource page for citizens interested in learning about our work. Feel free to share this quick and easy link with friends and members of the community who might have an interest! (www.lwv.org/ImmigrationStudy). FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING ON REDISTRICTING Redistricting is a crucial factor in assuring equal weight to the vote of each voter. Historically, many attempts have been made to alter the redistricting process to favor one party or one candidate. A fair and rational process for the establishment of both congressional and state legislative districts assures that the "one (wo)man, one vote" principle is sustained. After extensive research, the Redistricting Study Committee has assembled its final report which is at the typesetter and should be mailed to members next week. Information included will be a history of redistricting in Oregon, options for the future, and a recap of redistricting practiced in other states. This report will provide some new information and should generate some interesting discussion. (This information provided by Kathleen Shelley, Redistricting Study Chair.) We will have a membership consensus meeting on this report on Thursday, February 15th at Sara Langton’s home at 61327 Rock Bluff Lane, Bend. The meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. and end at approximately 1:30 p.m. Bring your own bag lunch--drinks and dessert will be provided. I will e-mail you the directions as soon as Sara gets back from Hawaii—lucky her--and they will also be available at the First Thursday Luncheon on February 1, 2007. SUBSCRIBE TO THE LEGISLATIVE REPORT The LWVOR Action Committee will be producing a semi-monthly Legislative Report for the 2007 session. The first issue is due out on Jan. 26. Please subscribe by sending an e-mail to the LWVOR office (lwvor@lwvor.org): an email subscription is FREE!!, $50 for a mail subscription (mail check to LWVOR, 1330 12th Street, SE, Suite 200, Salem, OR 97302). This is a wonderful resource to keep track of what is happening at the State Legislature on all the issues of concern to League members. HOMELESS YOUTH STATE POSITION The State Homeless Youth Member Agreement Committee is meeting January 29 to draft the new LWVOR Homeless Youth position to be approved by the State Board on February 16. Thanks to all our members who attended our local membership meeting on this issue last November and helped provide information for this new state position. |
