PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Annual Meeting: At this time of year, we start planning for our Annual Meeting on April 26th. We need to activate our Budget Committee, Nominating Committee, By-Laws Committee, and hold our Program Planning Meeting for next year. We do this according to our By-Laws so there is time for these committees to come back to the Board with their recommendations which are then published in an Annual Meeting Workbook and distributed to our members a couple of weeks before the Annual Meeting. If you would like to participate on the Board for our local league over the next couple of years, now is your opportunity to volunteer. Serving on the Board is very rewarding and will enrich your life as it has mine. Contact me or any member of the board if you are interested in serving.

Program Planning Meeting: On January 18th, we had our Program Planning Meeting at Marie and Pat Gibson’s house. Eleven members attended and we had a lively conversation, as usual. The consensus was not to endorse either of the State League Studies which had been submitted to us. There will undoubtedly be more proposals submitted for state studies as we get closer to State Convention in May. For our local program, members again agreed to have a general Civic 101 program that would allow us to have educational program and speakers about issues of concern to our members. The issue that received the most discussion was the poor state of our County Mental Health Department and its inability to serve the low income public because of a lack of parity in funding from the State; and the total lack of mental health service for people who do not meet the low income requirements, but who cannot afford health insurance.

State Convention and Raffle: The LWVOR Convention will be held Friday-Sunday, May 18-20, 2007 at McMenamins Edgefield, Troutdale, Oregon. A raffle drawing will be held on Saturday night, May 19 (see inside for details on the convention and the raffle!)

See you at the First Thursday Luncheon!
