DAVID FIDANQUE

Executive Director - American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon

ACLU EXPERIENCE

1982 – Present. Mr. Fidanque has been Executive Director of the ACLU of Oregon since 1993. He joined the Oregon affiliate in 1982 as its Associate Director in Eugene, coordinating ACLU activities in southwest Oregon. The Oregon ACLU currently has ten staff members, approximately 14,000 members and dozens of volunteer attorneys. The Executive Director has primary responsibility for supervising the ACLU's activities in its four major program areas: litigation, lobbying, communications and field organizing. In addition, Mr. Fidanque is the primary spokesperson for the organization.

He has been instrumental in crafting the ACLU of Oregon’s advocacy of civil liberties and civil rights based on the Oregon Bill of Rights. He has also has led or supervised the Oregon ACLU’s activities on numerous ballot measure campaigns and has testified before the Oregon Legislature on civil liberties issues since 1983.

Since 9/11, Mr. Fidanque has spoken at dozens of public forums on the erosion of civil liberties resulting from the actions of the Bush Administration in the war on terrorism. Since May 2006, he has served as Chair of the National ACLU Executive Directors Steering Committee which helps coordinate ACLU staff work between the national organization and its 50 affiliates around the country.

GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES

2001 – Present. Member, Law Enforcement Contacts Policy and Data Review Committee (LECC). Appointed by former Governor John Kitzhaber to help oversee the collection and analysis of traffic stop data by state and local police agencies. The LECC was created by the Legislature to deter racial and ethnic profiling by state and local police and to encourage stronger relationships between law enforcement agencies and communities of color.

1989 – Present. Member, Asset Forfeiture Oversight Advisory Committee. Appointed by four successive Governors to help oversee Oregon’s statewide forfeiture law that allows property to be seized if it is allegedly involved in illegal drug or other criminal activity. The Committee also makes recommendations to the Legislature for changes to the law.

1977. Admin. Assistant to State Rep. Grattan Kerans during 1977 Oregon Legislature.

1975 - 1976. News Reporter, KEZI-TV. Served as political editor, assignment editor and interim news director. Reporting beats included politics, energy, crime and the courts, and feature stories.

1974 - 1975. News Reporter and Anchor, KZEL-FM. Responsible for half-hour evening newscast including international, national, state and local news.
